Doug vs. Wayne in Weightlifting
(Last Updated May 2000)

(don't forget to read the caveats!)

I have known Wayne for about 6 years.  When I first met him, we starting working out pretty regularly, meaning at least twice a week.  We were getting pretty strong.   Then we took six months off.  Then we worked out for two weeks.  Then we took a year off.  Then we worked out for three weeks.  Then we took a year off.   So, to get us motivated this time, we decided to have another bench pressing contest on December 9, 1998.   This will force both of us to work out really hard for at least a month.  We did this about two years ago.  The rules were that whoever could bench press the most weight one time is the winner, and loser pays $50.  Last time we did this about two years ago, we worked out hard for about 6 weeks, and then had our contest.  We started out at 200 lbs, and we both pressed it. Then upped it to 210, and again we both pressed it.  Then 225, we both pushed it up.  Then upped it to 235 lbs.  And we both got pinned at 235 lbs..  So it was a tie.  Bummer, as we are both extremely competitive, and hate to lose in ANYTHING.

Right now we are struggling with sets of eight at 165 lbs, so we got a ways to go.   Part of the reason why we have decided to start working out again is that Ted is hitting the ball TWICE as far as we are in our softball league.  Now Ted is a big guy, but he ain't twice as big, so we are feeling like girly men.  So now the contest is the same.  Except the winner this time gets $100, AND the winner also gets to write one paragraph on this page about how badly he kicked the other person's ass, and what a wimp the other person is.  And you all get to read it here.  Check back on December 10th for the results.  Meantime, I gotta go find some 'roids.....

P.S.  Don't forget, Wayne will pay CASH for you old business phone systems.   Not cellular phones, not the phone you got in your homes, but those multiline business phones with lots of buttons on them, from 2-50 lines.  Call him at 714-843-9999 at PhoneGuys USA.

UPDATE:  November 17th, 1998.  It has been a week.  We screwed up, didn't work out for seven days.  We are supposed to be working out 3 days are week.  Joseph, who works at the Phoneguys, wants to bet us that he can bench press more than both of us together, since he feels we are real wimpy.  We don't take the bet......
We workout.  I do a couple of sets of 10 at 155 lbs.  Wayne does sets of 10 at 135.  We put 185 on the bench, and we both can only do three.  We work out some triceps, legs, arms, etc.  And then we argue about who is doing better.  I say since I do sets of 10 at 155, and he does sets of 10 at 135, I am stronger.  He says we are even since we both only did 3 at 185 lbs.  We keep arguing, and then bet 5 bucks as to who could bench the most one time, right now as we stand.  Wayne puts 205 lbs on the bench.  I tell him this is a mistake.  He immediately gets pinned with the weight on his chest, saying, "get this weight off of me" in a muffled voice because there is no air in his chest anymore.   So he has 0 reps at 205.   I get under the bench, and I can't even get it off the damn bench press to try to lift it.  So I have 0 reps at 205.  It is a tie.  People in the gym look at us like we are idiots......wimpy idiots....

UPDATE:  November 24th, 1998.  It has been two weeks.  Again we screwed up, and didn't work out for more than seven days since last workout.  I say it is Wayne's fault, because he didn't call me.  Wayne says I was supposed to call him.    In any event, neither of us had the initiative to call the other person.  .

UPDATE:  November 25th, 1998.  In the morning, we confirm we are going to work out tonight.   But that evening, same thing happens.  Each person waits for the other person to initiate the workout.  Neither person makes the phone call.  We are getting weaker by the day......

UPDATE:  December 21st, 1998.  Okay.  I confess.  The reason that there are no updates, is that we haven't worked out in a month.  We postponed the contest temporarily.   Hopefully will resume in Mid January.  As of right now, we are both pretty wimpy, lost our strength, so we have to start over again.   We suck.

UPDATE:  May 12, 2000: Okay, so now we are working out consistently three days a week with Larry.  Right now, I can get 8 reps at 185, 3 reps at 205.  Wayne is kicking my ass, he is getting 6 reps at 225, which is about the same that Larry can get.  Larry outweighs me by 80 lbs, so I don't feel bad about that.  However, Wayne weighs about the same as I do.  BUT, I caught Wayne taking Andro, and I saw a bottle of Creatin in his Explorer, so he is taking chemical alternatives to beat me in weight lifting, that cheating bastard....
